AISI 1010 Carbon Steel Alloy

Steel Metal Alloy Grades, Properties and Machinability of 1010 Carbon Steel

Carbon Steel Alloy 1010, a miscellaneous grade metal alloy, has relatively low strength. It has a machinability of AISI 1010 carbon steel and good formability and ductility. Through using conventional methods, it can easily be formed and welded and can also be quenched and tempered. As far as its applications go, it’s mainly used on cold-headed fasteners and bolts. Due to its density of around 0.284 pounds per cubic inch, this alloy is commonly used in the construction industry.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF AISI 1010

AISI 1010 is a low-carbon alloy appropriate in sheet and strips for deep drawing, carburized and structural applications. AISI 1010 is ideal for the automobile industry, where it frequently is used for auto bodies, fenders, and smaller parts including pans and transmission covers.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF AISI 1010

  • Carbon 0.08-0.13
  • Manganese 0.30-0.60
  • Phosphorus 0.040 max
  • Sulfur 0.050 max
  • Silicon 0.10 max
  • Iron balance

HEAT TREATMENT OF AISI 1010

  • Normalize at 1725° to 1775°F (941° to 968°C) before air cooling
  • Anneal at 1650° to 1750°F (899° to 954°C) before furnace cooling
  • Harden at 1650° to 1700°F (899° to 927°C) before quenching in water, brine or caustic
  • Can be case hardened

APPLICATIONS OF AISI 1010

  • Automobile components, including auto bodies, fenders, pans, transmission covers
  • Structural shapes
  • Carburized parts
  • Washers
  • Nails
  • Rivets
  • Bushings

MACHINABILITY OF AISI 1010

  • Cold worked: 55% rating
  • Hot rolled: 40% rating

WORKABILITY OF AISI 1010

  • Low ductility, uniform composition
  • Appropriate for moderate deformation
  • Use aluminum killed cold rolled sheets and strips when forming or drawing
